Role Mission:  The Groundskeeper is responsible for operating a clean, safe, sustainable, high-quality area by procuring, planting, and maintaining a native tree line and other native plant gardens to enhance the learning environment for our Agriculture department.  Groundkeepers exemplify IDEA’s commitment to excellence through successful implementation of co-owned lessons afforded to the campus through the Texas Parks and Wildlife grant opportunities. 


The Groundskeeper is a 1-year part-time on-site position at IDEA Palmview College Prep located in the Rio Grande Valley region.

  • Non-Supervising Role
  • Monday-Friday 12:00-4:00PM
  • Co-facilitation of Agriculture lessons geared towards sustaining native plants and species
  • Procure and maintain grounds according to the guidelines in the Texas Parks and Wildlife grant work.


What You’ll Do  Accountabilities:


The Groundskeeper performs landscaping tasks using power equipment and hand tools to maintain the Texas Park and Wildlife grant area grounds. 


Duties/ Responsibilities:

Mows area, weeds, and rakes leaves as assigned.

Picks up and removes trash prior to maintaining a designated area.

Empties trash and recycling containers.

Trims bushes, shrubs, trees, and hedges.

Prepares soil and plants flowers, bushes, hedges, or shrubs.

Plants trees and prunes them when necessary.

Cuts and removes trees as needed.

Applies fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides as directed.

Performs routine maintenance on power equipment.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Assists teacher with lessons about the plants, wildlife, and areas on campus. 


Required Skills/Abilities:

Ability to operate various types of power equipment including lawnmowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping equipment.

Ability to use hand tools required for landscaping.

Ability to follow instructions and complete assignments.

Extensive knowledge of landscaping techniques and processes.

Excellent time management skills.



Compensation & Benefits: 

Compensation for this role is set at an hourly rate of $14/hr. This position is 100% grant funded with Texas Parks and Wildlife grant and will require a time and effort report.

Required experience:

  • Education:  HS diploma or GED required
  • License or Certification: NA
  • Bilingual Preferred


Goals: As part of the Agriculture and Science department, you will contribute to reaching the following ambitious goals:

  1. 100% of scholars reach mastery on the 6-7th Science exams.
  2. 90/60/30% of scholars reach Approaches/Meet/Masters on the 8th grade STAAR assessment.
  3. 100% of Agriculture students participate in at least 1 campus based 4-H or FFA event per quarter.
  4. 100% of all students participate in 40 hours of Texas Parks and Wildlife based lessons for sustainability and wildlife as part of the Texas Parks and Wildlife grant.
  5. 100% of the Texas Parks and Wildlife grant goals/expectations are met by March 2022.


Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods walking, standing, bending, stretching, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, or kneeling.

Must be physically able to operate power equipment.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.

Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.
