Staff Accountant

 

Position overview: 

As Staff Accountant, you will be responsible for proper financial reporting and compliance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for a non-profit organization as well as State and Federal guidelines related for any general accounting transactions. The Staff Accountant will report to the Director of Accounting.  

 

As a member of the National Treasury team, you will support all regions across four states to achieve annual operating income goals while remaining good stewards of public funds and donations. You will be the subject matter expert on all cash accounts transactions, money market accounts, child nutrition revenues, prepaid, accounts receivable and be adept at translating them to stakeholders across the organization. 

 

 

Location: This is a full-time hybrid position based in Texas with preference given to candidates who live in Austin, El Paso, Houston, Permian Basin (Midland/Odessa), Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, and Tarrant County (Fort Worth), or who are willing to relocate.

 

Travel Expectation: Up to 30% of the time during the busiest parts of the year.

 

Compensation & Benefits:

Salaries for people entering this role typically fall between $60,500 and $72,600, commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications and in alignment with internal equity. This role is also eligible for a performance bonus based on individual and organizational performance and goal attainment.

In this role you will: 

  • Keep current on new and upcoming standards. 
  • Drive strategies to verify all departments (AP, Payroll, AR, etc) have posted all bank activity in a timely manner.
  • Drive strategies to complete the month end close process by the dates outlined in the Month End Close Processing Checklist with a 10% reduction of time spent by the end of the next school year. 
  • Review and reconcile all bank accounts.  
  • Work collaboratively with the Accounts Payable and Payroll departments to verify all activity reflected in the bank statements (EFT, Voids & Wires) have been posted.
  • Work collaboratively with the account receivable clerk to post cash receipts.
  • Work with external parties to resolve issues that may arise during preparation of reconciliations.
  • Reconcile accounts related to money market and investment accounts.  
  • Review related Statement of Activity accounts to determine reasonableness of amounts, detect potential errors and analyze significant variances.
  • Actively participate with the accounting and payroll, fixed asset accountant, child nutrition program, accounting operation, budget, and student information systems teams to create an environment of trust, respect and encouragement.

Required education/experience: 

  • Education:  Bachelor’s degree in accounting, management, finance, or business 
  • Experience: 3 years accounting experience; preferably non-profit or educational setting; well-rounded knowledge of single audits and EDGAR requirement 
  • Licenses or Certifications: CPA preferred 
  • Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with the ability to use Microsoft products, including PowerPoint, experience with Employee Information Systems, Enrollment Platforms, and other benefits databases. 
  • Strong Excel knowledge and skills. 
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment with associates. 
  • Effective planning and priority setting. Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously while working under pressure to meet deadlines.
