Position Mission: The Director of Construction is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of major construction projects for IDEA Public Schools and for the overall leadership and management of the District’s capital improvements program. This encompasses administrative tasks in directing, planning and supervising design and construction of major capital projects; leads the design and the preparation of construction documents and specifications; coordinates and reviews construction and renovation projects; ensures that work and projects is in compliance with, federal and state law, local codes and statutes, policy direction of the School Board, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.

 

This is a full-time hybrid (on-site/remote) position based in Texas with preference given to candidates who live in Austin, El Paso, Houston, Permian Basin (Midland/Odessa), Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, and Tarrant County (Fort Worth), or who are willing to relocate.

Compensation: 

 

  • This role is also eligible for a performance bonus based on team performance and goal attainment. 
  • Salaries for people entering this role typically fall $82,090 for 0 years of experience and $100,971, commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications and in alignment with internal equity. This role is also eligible for a performance bonus based on organizational performance and goal attainment.

In this role you will:

  • Manage coordination with Project Management Services Inc. (PMSI) to ensure project schedules, standards and construction to meet the IDEA Program.    
  • Ensures timely and clear updates for all projects to all stakeholders for the project 
  • Problem solves internal construction issues to develop path forward for in case of delays  
  • Work with local government entities on permit, inspection, and occupancy processes; engaging other internal stakeholders, as needed. 
  • Prepares construction cost estimates and planning schedules, and develops strategy and data to justify projected facility needs, site requirements, and expenditures  
  • Work with regional and campus leaders to determine efficient use of space and make recommendations as to when additional space is needed. Provide solutions with respect to departmental space needs. 
  • Coordinates capital construction activities such as renovations, inspections, contractor and architect meetings, permitting activities, progress approval, project close-out, calendars, mandated reports, etc. for the purpose of ensuring that all phases of construction projects are completed within specifications, within cost parameters, and with minimal interruption to site personnel. 
  • Assures the financial well-being of the capital funding program by performing cost control activities and monitoring all fiscal operations of capital projects 
  • Maintain system for tracking all warranty items and evaluating the functionality and performance of items  
  • Work with and support training of Regional Managers to ensure that warranty tickets are entered into internal management system  
  • Ensure that all close out documents are on project management software and delivered to IDEA in a timely manner 

 

Required experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required in construction project management or related field; Master’s degree or other advanced degree in relevant field preferred
  • Experience: 5-7 years professional experience, construction management preferred

Accountabilities:

 

You will be responsible for leading your team to meet the following ambitious goals:

  • 100% of programmed schools in operation with teacher and student Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO) two weeks before the first day of school.
  • 100% of programmed portables and Master Planned and CapEx projects in operation with teacher and student TCO two weeks prior to first day of school.  
  • 100% of emergency Capex projects follow the correct approval and procurement process
  • 100% of punchlists created and resolved for every new school within 60 days after the first day of school.
  • 85% retention of Facilities and Construction staff

 

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

                      Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

                      Must be reliable, punctual have a strong drive to do whatever it takes

                      Must have solid written and verbal communication skills

                      Must be open to observation and feedback

                      Able to work independently when needed

                      The ability to motivate, delegate, and lead a diverse team to accomplish goals.

                      Computer literacy; can use Microsoft Office software.

                      Strong mathematical skills with ability to understand and interpret data (charts, graphs, etc.).

                      Can follow verbal and written instructions/guidance.

                      Ability to travel up to 50% of the time
