Position Overview: The Assistant Director of Internal Communications will steward IDEA’s brand locally and nationally by spearheading IDEA’s internal communications strategy. S/he will oversee the HUB, All-Staff Facebook group, leadership emails, staff newsletters, benefits enrollment communications, crisis communications pertaining to staff, IDEA’s organizational update, and other internal organizational messaging. Under his/her leadership, IDEA will continue to elevate and increase staff communications so that the greater Team & Family stays and grows with IDEA to ultimately achieve the goal of College for All. S/he will coach and develop a team of 1-2 direct reports.


Compensation & Benefits:

Salaries for people entering this role typically fall between $66,600 and $80,600, commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications and in alignment with internal equity. This role is also eligible for a performance bonus based on team performance and goal attainment.

Staff Communications: Serve as the leader for internal communications at IDEA Public Schools in partnership with the Director of Internal Communications, to ensure Internal Communications at IDEA are timely, consistent, and rooted in a scalable and sustainable strategic framework as IDEA’s employee and student population continues to grow.

  • The HUB: IDEA’s intranet site that should be the go-to source for all staff communications. The HUB has DropBox-like functionality for personal file storage, access to organizational team sites (managed by teams), weekly news and announcements (managed by Team MCC), and more. Increased adoption and functionality are the goals for the next Academic year.
  • IDEA’s Staff Blogs: IDEA generates its own blog content that includes the highlighting of (1-2 times monthly) IDEA’s stellar employees with our key audiences.
  • Lead Spotlight, IDEA’s all-staff biweekly newsletter, from design and SME partnership, strategy, drafting, copy-editing, and data metrics.
  • Staff Communications: Develop and distribute all-staff emails and help lead two all-staff calls annually, develop a robust internal communications strategy to build affiliation and pride among staff while consistently informing them of important information and context.
  • Meet with various stakeholders throughout the organization to develop and disseminate a wide array of initiatives for staff, including but not limited to DEI, human resources, and health & safety information.  
  • Assist the Director of Internal Communications and Director of External Communications in overhauling Crisis Communications at IDEA Public Schools.
  • All staff Facebook group: posting, metrics, upkeep, security, and improvement of the group for staff.


Change Management: Continually seeking to improve Internal communications (IC) at IDEA with the goal of closing information gaps, improving alignment with strategic goals, promoting two-way dialogue, boosting morale and supporting employee understanding of what is expected to deliver results.

  • Staff BOY (Beginning of Year) Guide: Creating a guide with staff essentials such as HR and benefits information, pay dates, tax resources, organizational core values, and more.
  • Microsoft SharePoint: Partner with the software development and information technology team to ensure our internal intranet is the most effective it can be for our staff. In many respects, the Assistant Director of Internal Communications will be the liaison between the technology and the people of IDEA. 
  • Further establish an Internal Communications philosophy and cascade framework to benchmark our engagement with over 11,000 employees across ages, functions, five states and 11 regions.
  • Manage the Internal Communications Manager in developing talking points and communication plans for org-wide initiatives and updates.


Publications: Serve as an editor for IDEA’s publications through project management and leading the research, planning, copy development, copy editing, business partner review, translation, and design of the following publications:

  • Persistence/Enrollment publications
  • Grade-level publications (e.g., Pre-K book, middle school book, etc.)
  • IMPACT Magazine
  • Donor Stewardship: partner with Advancement team to provide content for donor stewardship efforts and align on best metrics.

Events: Partner with the Greater Communications Team to ensure the following:

  • Plan, draft, and execute a run-of-show for IDEA events such as College Signing Day or Back to School Bash.
  • Ensure important communication messages are shared about the events, from preparation and save-the-dates, to livestream, to recaps.
  • Work with digital communications and family communications manager to coordinate information for the All-Staff Facebook group.


 Train IDEA’s leaders on organizational messaging for families and staff

  • During summer training and other leadership opportunities, educate IDEA’s leaders on latest messaging to ensure our senior most leaders are speaking about the organization in the same way.
  • Develop and lead Roadmap trainings for email platforms and The HUB TeamSite management and SharePoint.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Direct management of the Internal Communications Manager(s)
  • Oversee the goal setting and professional development process for direct reports
  • Host Weekly Team Meetings with the Internal, External, and Digital Communications team, weekly check-ins with direct report(s), and quarterly team step backs.
  • Report to the Director of Internal Communications

Required Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in applicable field preferred
  • Experience: 5+ years of communication and/or educational professional experience required



As part of the Communications team, you will be responsible for leading your team to meet the following ambitious goals

  1. Achieve 12% content engagement rate (as measured by clicks-per-open) for all-staff email correspondence from senior leadership
  2. Will achieve 85% retention of all Communications staff
  3. Increase overall HUB traffic by 10% year over year
  4. Increase functionality and use of the HUB, Spotlight, the all-staff Facebook Group, among other internal communication channels
  5. Share compelling content, graphics, photos, and key information across all internal communication channels
  6. Support staff retention by ensuring all IDEA employees have what they need during the BOY (Beginning of Year) season



Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Experience in internal communications
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint and/or other intranet systems
  • Relationship-building and influencing skills, collaborating with internal stakeholders
  • Creative, ambitious and highly adept in designing and implementing cohesive communications strategies
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and written
  • Results and quality-focused with an eye for detail, a bias for excellence in building and deploying communications plans and managing multiple communications platforms and channels
